Aristotle was uncertain whether sponges had been animals, which in his program must have sensation, hunger, and locomotion, or vegetation, which did not: he realized that sponges could feeling contact and would contract if going to be pulled off their rocks, but which they ended up rooted like plants and under no circumstances moved about.[155]
